This weekend the troops ventured to Hill City, SD. This is a city in the "heart of the Black Hills" that was a junction point for the train. This town has a lot to offer for a day trip.
Our first stop was at Prairie Berry Winery. A local winery that uses local produce like choke cherries and buffalo berries in their wines. We haven't been to a winery since Pres was born so we were excited to go. However there was a little apprehension as we likened it to taking your baby to a bar. So the compromise was that Regan did the tasting and Karley made sure to look like a responsible adult with a baby. The use of 4 syllable words was imperative to sell the crowd...who really could not have cared less that a baby was there. Anyway Regan was pleased and 3 bottles came home with us.
Next stop was the Geological Museum. This is run by the same folks that discovered SUE the T-rex. We were really impressed by the collection.
The Mickelson Trail is an old rail bed that they have graveled and maintained for recreation. It is over a 100 miles and has multiple tunnels and bridges. We tackled a fraction of it and really enjoyed it. The views were great and the trail was in great shape. We even saw a snake! Karley thought it was an anaconda and Reg was saying it was just a garter snake...pretty similar so nothing really to argue about.
We wrapped up the day by grabbing dinner at the Alpine Inn. This is a local place that is known for their dinner. The only option on the menu is 6 or 9 ounces. They serve salad, fillet, potato & texas toast. We lined up with the other patrons and 50 min later were seated!!
Great weekend and nice weather. We are over 80 degrees...wind still here but at least there is no snow! Made some time to squeeze in dog park & Bear Country, whole family was happy. Pics waiting if you want to take a glance. Sending you love from So Dak!
